Are you the kind of person who likes to wax poetic about all things Windsor?

The Rose City's poet laureate, Marty Gervais, is inviting anyone who wishes to share a poetic thought about his beloved city to express themselves during "3 days in august," an event designed to showcase Windsor and its stories.

"I want people to write stories. They can be anecdotal, sentimental, Windsor at night, historical, anything. This is a celebration of the city," said Gervais.

The theme, he said, is Windsor and its people, places and passions. Whether it's a love or a hate. Gervais said he's looking for honesty and interesting angles. But no "political diatribes."

A lifelong writer and publisher, Gervais said he knows writers need deadlines, hence the offered writing period of Aug. 17 to 19. The deadline for submissions, in electronic form, is Aug. 25.

Under Gervais's guidance, his University of Windsor students will edit and select the best for an anthology to be published next April by Black Moss Press. Local writer Vanessa Shields will be a guest editor for the project.

Participants won't need to rhyme off the reasons for their Windsor passions as submissions can be prose, free verse or any other type of poetry, from haiku to ode to iambic pentameter.

"It's a great way to herald our city," said Gervais. He's also invited a cross-section of professional writers from across Canada, anyone who has ever been here or has a Windsor connection, to submit pieces as well.

Those whose work is selected for the published anthology will get copies of the finished product and be invited to a splashy book launch next spring. The finished product will also be on bookstore shelves across Canada.

Up to six poems, each up to 1,200 words in length, will be allowed per submission. For more information, including submission guidelines, visit the publisher's website or check us out on Facebook. You can also email us atdschmidt@windsorstar.com.
