Buxton National Historic Site and Museum
The Buxton National Historic Site and Museum commemorates the historic Elgin Settlement established by Rev. William King in 1849. King, a former slave owner turned abolitionist, purchased 9,000 acres of crown land with the help of Lord Elgin - the then Governor General of Canada. King brought fifteen of his slaves with him and offered them a free life. For many fugitive slaves, the Elgin Settlement became the last stop along the Underground Railroad. The site now hosts a heritage log cabin, schoolhouse, and barn - along with a church cemetery nearby.
