The Argyle General Store

The Argyle General Store has been around since the late 1800's, serving the local Woodville community. A featured location in Dorothy Ellen Palmer's novel When Fenelon Fallsthe Argyle General Store is a part of the Kawartha Northumberland Butter Tart Tour. In the book, the butter tarts are a favourite snack for Yogi, a caged bear cub and local attraction in Rosedale

Like most general stores it was carried a host of "soup to nuts" sundries, but what it was famous for was its tires. People used to travel from all over the county to shop for tires in Argyle. Some even nicknamed the store "Tireville". The first owner Vic Fleming was also known for finding hard-to-get items in difficult times. During the restrictions of the Second World War, he always had a supply of sugar items. He never revealed his sources.
