A National Historic Site of Canada, Bellevue House was constructed around 1840 by Charles Hayes - a wealthy merchant who profited greatly from the prosperous decade of the 1830's. It is best known as home of Sir John A. Macdonald (Canada's first Prime Minister) and his family from 1848-1849.
