Old Bank of Commerce (Commerce Court North)

The historic Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce building was once the tallest in Toronto. An art-deco monolith overlooking the downtown, it was build on the site where old York's first Methodist church once stood. The church - which relocated and became the Metropolitan United Church is commemorated by a plaque on the east facade of the building.

The interior is as impressive as the exterior, with the great banking hall on the first floor extending six stories in height, featuring tall arches. The basement vault is the equivalent of four stories below ground.

At the top of the building, four large sculptured faces face in each direction of the city - a particular architectural design that is referenced in Terry Murray's Faces on PlacesThe building is now integrated into Commerce Court, but is still a visible reminder of a bygone area.
