Sandwich First Baptist Church

Located in Sandwich - a suburb of Windsor, Ontario - The Sandwich First Baptist Church played an integral role in the Underground Railroad. Hundreds of escaped slaves fled across the Detroit River into Windsor and Sandwich First Baptist was their first stop. Originally a log cabin in 1820, it was re-built for free by fugitive slaves in 1841. Holes in the sanctuary floor - through which slaves escaped bounty hunters to hide in the church basement - remain to this day.
