The 2012 Schwartz Award Winners Announced

The Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children?s Book Awards, Canada?s Young Readers' Choice awards, recently announced its 2012 winners. For this unique literary award, students in grades 2 and 3 chose the winning author and illustrator of the picture book, and the recipient of the young adult / middle reader award was chosen by grade 8 students.

The Schwartz Award Shortlist represented authors from across the country, from Newman?s Cove in Newfoundland to Victoria, British Columbia.

Winner of the 2012 Children?s Picture Book Award

  • Loon (Groundwood Books ) by Susan Vande Griek and illustrated by Karen Reczuch.

Winner of the 2012 Young Adult/ Middle Reader Award

  • The Whole Truth (HarperCollins Canada) by Kit Pearson

Here?s what student jurors had to say about the winning titles:

Loon: ?The book taught us about the life cycle of the loon, and their environment. The detailed artwork looked like real life, and the colours and textures were beautiful.?

The Whole Truth: ?The characters were so believable. It felt like you were stepping back in time. I fell in love with it within the first few pages.?  

These two awards, worth $6,000 each, recognize artistic excellence in writing and illustration in English-language Canadian and are awarded annually. This year, the jurors were students from Parkdale Junior and Senior Public School in Toronto. For more information, visit the Ontario Arts Council.
