Alice Munro has won the 2013 Nobel Prize for Literature.
The first Canadian to win the award, the 110th Nobel Laureate is among such literary giants as George Bernard Shaw, T.S. Eliot and Ernest Hemingway. She is only the 13th woman to win the prize since its inception in 1901.
Writing short stories since she was a student at the University of Western Ontario, in 2012 Munro published Dear Life, and announced her retirement in 2013, at the age of 82.
Peter Englund, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, called her a "master of the contemporary short story". BBC Arts Editor Will Gompertz said of Munro, "Very few writers are her equal. She gets to the heart of what it is to be human".
