Authors At Harbourfront Announces Participants for Poetry NOW

Hear ye, hear ye Authors at Harbourfront Centre (AUTHORS) is delighted to announce the 20 poets selected for this year?s Poetry NOW event taking place on April 3. A jury comprising the Toronto Poet Laureate George Elliott Clarke, Authors at Harbourfront Centre Director Geoffrey Taylor and Artistic Associate Jen Tindall will select one author to win an invitation to read at the 34th annual International Festival of Authors (October 24 to November 3, 2022) and have their book advertised in NOW Magazine.

The 20 established and upcoming poets selected to grace the AUTHORS stage are: Rosemary Aubert, Giles Benaway, Josephine Dion Casey, Warren Clements, Glen Downie, Baila Ellenbogen, Kim Fahner, Mathew Henderson, Al Hunter, Amanda Jernigan, Beatriz Hausner, Shannon Maguire, Christine McNair, Jim Nason, Lillian Necakov, Peter Norman, John Oughton, Jim Smith, Natalie Zina Walschots and Lisa Young. AUTHORS welcomes back NOW Magazine?s Susan G. Cole to host this year?s event.

For the fifth year, AUTHORS has joined their long-time media partner NOW Magazine in issuing an open call for submissions from poets who have been published within the past five years and are currently in print with a trade publisher. AUTHORS accepted submissions for the event through each poet?s publishing representative until February 28, with selected participants notified through March 4. Each poet reads for up to five minutes and their books will be for sale at the event.

Event date, time, and location: Wednesday, April 3 at 7:30pm in the Brigantine Room, 235 Queens Quay West, Toronto.

Tickets: $10 to the general public, FREE for members, students, and youth 25 and under.

George Elliott Clarke is the City of Toronto?s fourth poet laureate as well as a dramatist and professor. His honours include the Governor General?s Literary Award for Poetry, National Magazine Gold Medal for Poetry, appointment to the Order of Canada at the rank of Officer and eight honorary doctorates. As a writer he has published in a variety of genres, including verse collections, a verse-novel and two verse plays. Clarke?s latest book of poetry is Red.

Since its inception in 1974, Authors at Harbourfront Centre has hosted more than 8,000 authors from more than 100 countries, including 20 Nobel Laureates. Our season runs from September to June and includes the annual International Festival of Authors (IFOA) (October 24 to November 3, 2022), including YoungIFOA and IFOA Ontario; and the annual ALOUD: a Celebration for Young Readers with Forest of ReadingĀ® Festival of Trees? (May 15 and 16, 2013).
