The 2013 finalists list for CBC's Canada Writes poetry competition features writers spread across the whole of the country.

CBC Books, with its partners the Canada Council for the Arts, Air Canada's enRoute magazine and The Banff Centre, announced the finalists for the CBC Poetry Prize/Prix de poésie Radio-Canada today. The five English and five French texts were selected from over 2,000 works of poetry.

The five English-language finalists are:

  • Cassidy McFadzean of Regina, SK for "On Naming and the Origin of Pity"
  • Pamela Porter of North Saanich, BC for "Borealis"
  • Robin Richardson of Toronto, ON for "Sit How You want, Dear; No One's Looking"
  • James Scoles of Winnipeg, MB for "The Trailer"
  • Alison Smith of New Germany, NS for "Bluegrass Meteorology"
  • The Grand Prize winner, as selected by the jury, will be announced on Monday, September 30. The jury for this year's CBC Poetry Prize is Sue Goyette, David McGimpsey and Anne Michaels.

For the French shortlist, please visit CBC Books.

The five shortlisted works of poetry are published on the Canada Writes website. The public is invited to read all of the poems, share their comments and vote for their favourite (the vote will not have an effect on who wins the Grand Prize).

In addition to a cash prize of $6,000 from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Grand Prize winner will receive a two-week writing residency at The Banff Centre's Leighton Artists' Colony and will be published in Air Canada's enRoute magazine. The four other finalists will each receive $1,000 from the Canada Council for the Arts. The Grand Prize will be announced September 30, 2013.
