Eventually, a writer needs to decide whether he or she wants to work with a literary agent. If you’re a writer in the Durham Region and you’d like to know more about signing with an agent and getting published, you’ll want to head to the breakfast meeting of The Writers’ Community of Durham Region on January 14th. Hilary McMahon of Westwood Creative Artists, Canada’s largest literary agency, will be giving a talk and sharing her wealth of knowledge about publishing.
Hilary will discuss the benefits of having an agent, how to approach an agent and the challenges of getting published. She’ll also offer suggestions for how to put together a query letter, how to market yourself and what to expect once you’ve signed with an agent.
Pre-registration is required, and the deadline for registering is 9 a.m. on Wednesday, January 11th. The January 14th meeting will run from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Registration fees are $20 for members who pre-pay or $25 for members a the door. The non-member rate is $25 and must be paid in advance. You can register at www.wcrd.org, by phone at 905-686-0211 or by email at [email protected].
The meeting is at the Ajax Convention Centre (550 Beck Crescent, Ajax).
Those interested in honing their blogging skills can stick around after the breakfast for a mini workshop titled “Break into Blogging.” The workshop is facilitated by Noelle Bickle who blogs at www.boundbytheword.wordpress.com and www.ateenagemutant.wordpress.com. Tickets for the mini workshop are $10.
