February has been a very exciting month for Canadian readers. Last week the nation tuned in to the finale of Canada Reads 2012: True Stories , but what you may not know is that CBC also ran a contest announcing the winner of Young Canada Reads 2012. Similar to the adult version of Canada’s battle of the books, Young Canada Reads narrowed down a list of non-fiction titles to find the book all young Canadians should read this year.

The nominated books were:
Charlie: A Home Child’s Life in Canada by Beryl Young (Ronsdale Press)
Season of Rage: Hugh Burnett and the Struggle for Civil Rights by John Cooper (Tundra)
The Bite of the Mango by Mariatu Kamara with Susan McClelland (Annick Press)
Guardian Angel House by Kathy Clark (Second Story Press)
Fire on the Water: The Red-hot Career of Superstar Rower Ned Hanlan by Wendy A. Lewis (Lorimer)

CBC Radio One’s program “Mainstreet” with Stephanie Domet hosted the event along with a panel of junior highschool students. In a four to one vote, the students chose The Bite of the Mango over Guardian Angel House as the book all teen Canadians should read. Congratulations Mariatu!
