Due to its size and its short railings, the Prince Edward Viaduct became the site of hundreds of suicides. With over 400 suicides, it was ranked the second most fatal standing structure in the world, after the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. This led to the construction of a suicide barried called the "Luminous Veil," which received the 1999 Canadian Architect Award of Excellence. It was completed in 2003.
