Inaugural traffic

The consulting architect on the project was Edmund Burke and the designing and construction engineer was Thomas Taylor. Construction began on January 7, 1915.

The Prince Edward Viaduct System was opened on October 18, 1918. The bridge, which carries five lanes of traffic, plus a bike lane in each direction, on the top deck and two-way subway traffic on the lower deck, was named after Edward Prince of Wales (who later became King Edward VIII).
