When the Prince Edward Viaduct System was first proposed, it was very controversial. The project was going to cost millions of dollars and as the Danforth was still very small, the bridge was nicknamed "the bridge to nowhere." There were referendums on the construction every year in Toronto from 1910 to 1913 but it wasn't until 1913 that the project was finally approved.
