Headframes dominate the landscape of mining communities in Northeastern Ontario and Northwestern Quebec. Distinctive structures built to house the apparatus at the head of the mine shaft, headframes tower above their surroundings, reminding every resident that without the mine, there would be no reason for their settlement to exist. For the past several years, photographer Louie Palu and writer Charlie Angus have been documenting historic mining sites in the north. Many of these have since been erased from the landscape.
Known as Ontario's most historic town, Cobalt is a heritage mining town located off Highway 11B in beautiful Northern Ontario. Located in the historic town of Cobalt, the Right of Way Mine Site offers visitors the opportunity to see the surface infrastructure in a typical mining operation. In its time, Right of Way produced over 3,000,000 ounces of silver. Located on the North end of Cobalt lake, off Kerr Lake Rd.
Kirkland Lake was built on gold - was even dubbed "The Mile of Gold". Once housing seven of the province's greatest gold mines, and employing over 4400 people, Kirkland Lake is a lot quieter now. But at its heart is a history that helped shape the landscape of Northern Ontario. Here you can visit the historic Toburn Mine Property and visit the Museum of Northern History at the Sir Harry Oakes Chateau.
Completed in 1994, the Kirkland Lake Miners' Memorial commemorates the thousands of workers - both living and dead - who contributed to the industry. Every piece of the memorial was sourced locally - from the black granite of the structure to the belts and lamps donated by miners.
Housed in the Sir Harry Oakes Chateau, the Museum of Northern History provides visitors with over 5,000 pieces of history from the area's mining era. Harry Oakes was a gold mine owner, entrepreneur and philanthropist who became famous after his violent death in 1943.
The Toburn Gold Mine is the last vestige to Kirkland Lake's "Mile of Gold" era. Like Cobalt's Right of Way Mine, the Toburn site features buildings and infrastructure, as well as many geological samples that visitors can take home.
Sudbury and its municipalities carry a history of boom and bust and most of it has to do with the supply and demand of nickel and precious metals mining. Mining practice carry a stigma of pollution and eco-catastrophes, but over the years Greater Sudbury has incorporated world-renouned environmental reclamation policies that has turned the region into a remarkable green space.
The marker says it all. The nickel discovery site in the now-flooded and defunct Murray Mine is where Sudbury's remarkable mining history begins. When the mine finally closed in 1924, more than half a million tons of ore had been shipped from its depths. The marker sits on a large, paved pull-out along regional highway 35, about five kilometers outside Sudbury city centre.
Onaping Falls is a township in Greater Sudbury, and the amalgamation of three smaller towns: Dowling, Onaping, and Levack . A part of the regions historic lumber and mining past, the town sits where the Canadian Shield meets the Sudbury Nickel Irruptive - a massive meteor impact over a billion years old.
