The Huron County Museum is a first-class community museum offering visitors modern exhibition galleries as well as glimpses into the areas history. Permanent exhibits include The History Hall which allows visitors to see old store fronts and a full-sized locomotive.
The Huron Historic Gaol is a unique and imposing octagonal building which served as the County Jail from its opening in 1841 until 1972 when all inmates were transferred to regional facilities. The Gaol is now a National Historic Site.
Also known as the Rideau Waterway, the Rideau Canal connects the city of Ottawa to the city of Kingston. Using a system of Canals along the Cataraqui, St. Lawrence, and Ottawa rivers - as well as nearby lakes - the waterway today is used mainly for pleasure boating along its 202 km course. It takes approximately 3-5 days to travel the canals via boat, with several historic points of interest along the way.
The Sudbury Basin is a complex geological structure dating back millions of years, and where much of Greater Sudbury resides. Thirty-seven miles long and 17 miles wide, it produces most of the world's ores and precious metals. The floor of the basin contains some of the best agricultural land in Ontario. A plaque in Bell Park explains the significance of this geological site, and its role in the province's mining history.
Located in Bell Park, Sudbury's Mining Heritage Scultpure stands fifteen feet high, and offers a beautiful memorial to the contributions of so many miners - both living and dead - for more than a century.
The township of Muskoka Lakes is located along the Canadian shield and is comprised of several communities, including Port Carling, Port Sandfield, and Bala. The township contains the Muskoka Lakes: Lake Muskoka, Lake Rosseau, and Lake Joseph, and is known as "cottage country" due to its popularity from the Toronto, Niagara, and Southern Ontario regions.
Port Carling is an unincorporated community that also acts as the seat for the Township of Muskoka Lakes. Located on the Indian River, it was originally settled by the Ojibwe people in the 1850's before white settlers moved in. In 1869 a post office was established and the area became known as Port Carling, after John Carling the then minister of public works who was a big proponent of the locks connecting the surrounding lakes.
Known as Ontario's most historic town, Cobalt is a heritage mining town located off Highway 11B in beautiful Northern Ontario. Here you can discover the Heritage Silver Trail - a route linking several silver mines in the area - which offers excellent sightseeing, and visit the Cobalt Mining Museum to take a tour of the Right of Way mine site.
The Cobalt Mining Museum is the gatekeeper to much of the town's impressive history. Full of artifacts and boasting the world's largest display of native silver ore, the museum paints the necessary bigger picture about life during the town's mining era. An important stop before heading out to see the surrounding area's heritage sites.
Kirkland Lake was built on gold - was even dubbed "The Mile of Gold". Once housing seven of the province's greatest gold mines, and employing over 4400 people, Kirkland Lake is a lot quieter now. But at its heart is a history that helped shape the landscape of Northern Ontario. Here you can visit the historic Toburn Mine Property and visit the Museum of Northern History at the Sir Harry Oakes Chateau.
Completed in 1994, the Kirkland Lake Miners' Memorial commemorates the thousands of workers - both living and dead - who contributed to the industry. Every piece of the memorial was sourced locally - from the black granite of the structure to the belts and lamps donated by miners.

There's a reason Lake Huron and Huron County are dubbed "Ontario's West Coast". With its thirty thousand islands, Huron has the longest shoreline of any of the Great Lakes, and its northern parks offer plant and wildlife rarely found elsewhere. It is said that in the Bruce Peninsula, there are orchid species not found anywhere else in the world. Plus, being a part of the Niagara Escarpment biosphere, it also boasts unique geological formations.
Greater Sudbury's history begins as a small outpost for the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1883, as the transcontinential railway was nearing completion, blasting in an area now known as the Sudbury Basin revealed high concentrations of nickel deposits. Much like the well-documented American gold rushes, this nickel discovery brought in a flood of European settlers, who wanted to reap the rewards of mining.
